Kwan Kee Clay Pot Rice (Queen's Road West)

Its gigantic red sign, typical greasy spoon style interior and traditional stir-fries all point to an authentic Hong Kong culinary experience. Claypot rice is only served at night and features a three-rice blend enrobed in the oil brushed on the bottom of the pot. The rice is chewy and fragrant, with a crispy crust at the bottom perfectly scorched from the right amount of heat and time.

Signature dishes include White Eel Clay Pot Rice and Boiled Pig Bone with Soup.

Sun Yuen Hing Kee

Located next to Sheung Wan market, this traditionally styled, simple but well maintained barbecue shop has been run by the same family since the mid-1970s. Over the years they’ve built up an appreciative following so the small place fills quickly. The appetising looking suckling pigs are not the only draw: roast pork, duck and pigeon all have their followers, as do the soft-boiled chicken, the homemade sausages and the preserved meats.

Signature dishes include Suckling pig and Roasted rice.

Tsim Chai Kee (Wellington Street)

This highly regarded, simple noodle shop has been here since 1998 and is easy to spot – just look for the lunchtime queues. The staff are as bright as their aprons; the popular side booths are quickly snapped up; and the regulars know to eat outside peak times when the pace is less frenetic. The attraction is the handmade fish balls, the generously filled wontons and the beef; ordering a three topping noodle is the way to go.

Signature dishes include Wonton Noodles, Fish Ball Noodles and Beef Noodles.

Luk Yu Tea House

Large numbers of both regulars and tourists come to Luk Yu Tea House for the traditionally prepared and flavoursome dim sum, and its three floors fill up quickly. The animated atmosphere and subtle colonial decoration are appealing but no one really stays too long; the serving team in white jackets have seen it all before and go about their work with alacrity. Popular dishes are crispy deep fried chicken and fried noodles with sliced beef.

Signature dishes include Fried Pork Rib, Fish Roll, Pork Lung Soup, Scrambled Egg with Shark's fin, Crisp Chicken Stuffed with Glutinous Rice, Grilled Yunnan Ham and Sliced Pigeon.

Yat Lok

The signature roast geese glistening behind the window are marinated with a secret recipe and go through over 20 preparatory steps before being chargrilled to perfection. Char siu pork uses pork shoulder from Brazil for melty tenderness. Roast pork belly and soy-marinated chicken are also recommended. Expect to share a table with others. It’s been run by the Chu's since 1957 and in this location since 2011.

Sang Kee

Having stood here proudly for over 40 years, Sang Kee is a true symbol of Wan Chai and remains refreshingly impervious to modernisation. The owner insists on buying the seafood herself each day and the Cantonese dishes are prepared using traditional methods. You’ll find yourself thinking about their classic dishes like fried snapper, fried minced pork with cuttlefish, and braised fish with bitter melon long after you’ve sampled them.

Signature dishes include Siganus Guttatus Congee and Salt-baked Chicken.
